I-85 South of Hillsborough scheduled for night time closure.

Bridge Preservation Work to Close I-85 South in Hillsborough at Night, Beginning Today

WHAT: Nightly closures of Interstate 85 South at Old N.C. 86 (Exit 164)

WHEN: 9 p.m. to 6 a.m., beginning today, May 28. Work is expected to be completed by June 9.

DETOUR: Motorists traveling on I-85 South should take Old N.C. 86 (Exit 164) to Interstate 40 West and continue to I-85 South.

NOTE: The following information was released by the N.C. Department of Transportation.

Weather permitting, the N.C. Department of Transportation will close a section of Interstate 85 South in Hillsborough nightly today through the first full week in June for preservation work on the bridge over Orange Grove Road.

Crews will close I-85 South at Old N.C. 86 (Exit 164) each day from 9 p.m. until 6 o’clock the following morning, beginning Tuesday, May 28. With favorable weather, the work is expected to be completed by Sunday, June 9.

During the closures, motorists traveling on I-85 South should take Old N.C. 86 (Exit 164) to Interstate 40 West and continue to I-85 South.

Crews will remove the asphalt from the driving surface of the bridge and then use high-powered jets of water to remove any deteriorated concrete. Once this hydro-demolition process is complete, crews will place a layer of latex-modified concrete on the bridge’s surface. These enhancements will improve the ride quality for motorists, as well as help the 56-year-old bridge last longer by sealing and protecting the pavement from water damage.

Once the preservation work is completed on the southbound bridge, crews will begin work on the bridge carrying northbound I-85 traffic over Orange Grove Road. Additional information about work on the northbound bridge will be provided as it becomes available.

NCDOT reminds motorists to use caution in the area, watch signs for construction information and allow plenty of time to reach their destinations safely.
